Twitter has more users but i'v found jaiku has a better community, plus with it having proper threaded posts with comments it makes it much easier to have and follow a conversation.
the threads are forcing me to rethink browsing habit as I've been twittering nonstop for couple of weeks. twitter has alot of nonprofit techies which is (one of) my thing(s)
The lack of threads is the main reason I never stuck it out at twitter. I've been using forums for so many years that I found twitter hard to get used to where as with Jaiku I felt right at home. Plus the 140 character limit at twitter is not something I could ever get used to. In my eyes if I can fit it into 140 characters its probably not worth saying :)
pownce's interface is a bit too busy for my liking. and why do you need ratings for every note? i like jaiku's clean and simple ui (which is still prettier than twitter's). plus i use the S60 jaiku app and m.jaiku quite a bit. m.pownce is ok on mobiles but doesn't provide nearly as much functionality as the full web version (different views and links). whereas m.jaiku is about 70% of the web version.
I have a twitter, a pownce, and now a jaiku. I much prefer the interface in Jaiku, though I like the Pownce list of "real estate". I wish Jaiku pulled feeds more often. In the meantime, I'm sourcing my twitter with the jaiku front end, which I much prefer spending time in.
ok, so we like the ui best. what about the community? has jaiku attracted a different group with different interests? or are the discussions happening here as 'over there'?
pownce for me is out, as the main reason i like about this "microblog/s" is its sms notification as this makes the net and RL well connected in its basic form - voip/im/pstn the advanced - atleast for me. twitter have a larger user base that suits if one is looking for noise. i find forum like threads here quite compelling specially for group discussions though how i wish there's an option to make forum or threads private.
For me i don't "get" pownce (probably because the one person i know on there is also on jaiku).
Twitter, the interface is just too brutal/spartan, and i am struggling to see how to follow a conversation. I am giving it a go, by using Yahoo Pipes to send Jaiku updates into Twitter.
Jaiku, i started with the S60 client, then used it as a Facebook updater tool (send a message to one place, and everything else "gets" it). The threaded conversations are what "win" it for me. Semi-random people from around the world all taking part in a conversation. The channels idea is also nice (and it seems that people on twitter are attempting to copy it with a # idea)
It also seems that the "Valley/Blogiverse" crowd might be moving towards Twitter+FriendFeed to do a similar job to Jaiku but without the location and presence stuff.
when i first signed up for jaiku, i knew perhaps 5 people, and none of them in real life. i had more friends in services like friendster and even twitter. the way things are set up in jaiku (threads, good interface, easy to discover and join in a conversation) makes you want to continue using it and also invite your friends to use it. when i signed up for pownce, a group of jaikuers i know also signed up around the same time. yet most of us still kept on using jaiku and gave up on pownce after a while. so it's more than just "where all of your friends are". that alone might make me sign up for a service, but may not be compelling enough for me to carry on using the service.
i have since met many jaikuers in real life (about 30-40 maybe) and established wonderful friendships with some of you. so yeah, now jaiku is "where some of my friends are", but there are many other (perhaps equally important) factors that make jaiku my favorite social app / microblog.
@constantine so it's all down to walled gardens? will open social make a difference? or what about all the varoius so-called socmed aggregators? you may have something in that user engagement is what drives any social app regardless of its functionality. email is still relatively basic but v popular.

I've got one here, one on twitter and one on pownce but the other two never get used unless jaiku goes down.

what do you think the differences are between jaiku and the others? topics/themes? participants? something else?

the social app that is the best is the one where all of your friends are using it, the node is useless without the network in this situation.

@constantine - is that not true of any node?

no, some services are fantastic by themselves.

but sometimes, it's the functionality that drives/encourages user engagement!
